Like Wainwright said, ridge walking is the reason we walk the fells, something like that anyway. This ridge is a great walk. It’s not as famous as Striding Edge or Sharp Edge but nevertheless it’s got some great views, it’s got some narrow bits and it’s got the peak of Hopegill Head at the end of it.
Standing on the top of Hopegill Head is one of those moments where you just want to hold out your arms in the classic ‘I’ve conquered the mountain’ pose. Have a quick look around first because you’ll look a bit of an idiot.
The peak in the distance is Grisedale Pike, another classic.
I did a few sketches and took a few photos of this view from Whiteside because it shows the steepness of the crags and the spikiness of Hopegill Head. I scanned in the sketch and painted it using Artrage oils.
